What's New?

Come see what Rena is up to today!

January 17, 2002

Where to start....January 2002 started out with a bang, all right- on Friday night the 4th, our cat Spike was killed outside of our house by some roaming dogs. we didn't see or hear anything; our neighbor saw Spike on the lawn and came over to tell us. These dogs basically turned my poor cat inside out. There's a bush between our houses, and Spike liked to hide out underneath it. I think he was picked off by these dogs and dragged out from under the bush. I'm grateful that Rebecca had already been picked up by her dad when this happened, and telling her was one of the hardest things I've had to do so far as a parent. Her dad and I had adopted Spike from a shelter in 1993, and he went through the 1994 earthquake with us; our apartment had basically been destroyed, and Spike had been smart and fast enough to run under our bed when the furniture started crashing down, and he had dug into the carpet so ferociously that we had to literally peel him off the carpet one nail at a time. We got another cat shortly after that, and Spike and Tango were best buds, sparring and cuddling together. Recently Spike and Rebecca had gotten very close, with Spike hanging out in her room and playing with her and her friend Ryan, and I'm glad that he spent his last afternoon with us ensconsed in her room with them. Sometimes it's hard to accept that Spike isn't going to be coming into our room at night, ready to settle down and lick our hair before curling up beside us. Tango's a bit lost without his buddy, and our dogs are a bit confused too. Heck, I'm a bit lost myself without him.

We started our house remodel on Monday- in case you saw a large dust cloud floating by, that was us :-) Surprisingly, the boys aren't bothered by the noise and jackhammering. We're huddled into the living room and kitchen all day, which doesn't give us a lot of space, but we're managing. Luckily the weather's been cooperating. It's been brisk but sunny, so we've been able to escape outside to the warming embers of the winter desert sun, and when we need a total change of venue, we've been going across the street to our neighbor's house. She's on maternity leave with her new son Daniel, and her son Ryan's in Rebecca's class and her daughter Sophia is a year older than Jeremiah but they're pals. Small world- she went to high school with my brother's wife. Anyway, I've got stuff piled to the rafters, and it makes me realize how much *stuff* I have, and how little I really *need*. I'm really good at getting rid of stuff, and it took me a while to train Matt. When I met him, he'd get hives if I even went near things that hadn't been used in ages, but now that he's been *liberated* sort of, he's more tolerant of my need to simplify, simplify, simplify.

You know what? I really need to get a little more time to myself, not just a few borrowed minutes here and there while I write these journals late at night. These batteries need some serious recharging LOL. Nicholas was on the *I'm not napping* bandwagon today, and Jeremiah was whining to fill in the blanks, and I realized that I haven't done anything for ME in ages! Time to rectify that ASAP. Tonight Matt took all the kids upstairs so I could get my treasurer work done for my church (see, I didn't get any *me* time tonight either) and Nicholas screamed his head off the entire time until I came upstairs, so I had to race through my work, cringing all the time. Ugh...time to head back upstairs and get some rest so I can face tomorrow:-) Calgon, take me away PLEASE!!!

An exhausted Rena:-)
